Wichita-Heights, Shawnee Mission-East Win Kansas High School Boys Swim Titles

TOPEKA – Wichita-Heights and Shawnee Mission-East brought home the team titles in the 5-1A and 6A divisions on Saturday afternoon at the Kansas High School Boys Swim and Dive Championships in Topeka.

6A Meet

The 6A meet came down to the final event, with Shawnee Mission-East just edging OP-Blue Valley-North for the title by three points, 324 points to 321. Lawrence-Free State came in third with 281 points.

OP-Blue Valley-North got the meet started in record-breaking fashion as the foursome of Ryan McMonigle, Jamie Cohen, Sam Disette and Brian North topped the 200 medley relay in 1:34.11, slicing .38 off Washburn Rural’s 2014 record of 1:34.49. Lawrence-Free State’s Jordan Portela broke the second 6A record of the meet in the 100 fly, becoming the first swimmer in the division to break 50 with a 49.77. Jake Slitz had set the previous record of 50.00 in 2013. Portela teamed up with Evan Eskilson, Jack Ziegler and Nolan Stoppel to break the state record in the 400 free relay with a 3:08.07. Washburn Rural set the old record of 3:09.47 last year.

Portela also won the 200 free at the meet, touching first in 1:40.39. OP-Blue Valley-Northwest’s Philip Musser joined him as a double event winner, as Musser topped the 200 IM in 1:51.21 and the 100 free in 45.93.

5-1A Meet

Wichita-Heights claimed the 5-1A title with 287 points, comfortably ahead of OP-Blue Valley-Southwest (211 points) and OP-Blue Valley-West (201 points).

Wichita-Heights set the only new 5-1A swimming record of the meet, with Dylan Jensen, Dillon Cullinan, Cole Hager and Dawson Gantenbein clocking a 1:29.58 in the 200 free relay to take down Bishop Miege’s 2014 record of 1:29.73. In 1-meter diving, OP-Blue Valley-West’s Daniel Fecteau crushed the state record, scoring 533.55 points to demolish Adam Lower’s 460.45 point total from 2011.

Wichita-Heights senior Bryce Blattner left the meet with two individual state titles in hand in the 200 IM (1:53.73) and 100 back (51.21). Rose Hill’s Gavin Smith also won two, touching first in the 50 free (21.45) and 100 fly (51.86). John-Martin Schmidt of Topeka-Hayden added two wins in the 200 free (1:41.83) and 100 free (46.75), while Rose Hill’s Noah Baden got to the wall first in the 500 free with a 4:45.58 and the 100 breast with a 57.74.
