Western Albemarle Girls, Hidden Valley Boys Top Virginia 3A Swimming and Diving Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG – Nearly 20 meet records went down Friday afternoon at the Virginia 3A Swimming and Diving Championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, as the Western Albemarle girls and Hidden Valley boys claimed the team titles in an exciting afternoon of racing.

Western Albemarle scored 317 points to dominate the meet, with Cave Spring finishing almost 100 points back with 220 points. Lafayette was right behind in third with 217 points. The boys’ meet was significantly closer, with Hidden Valley topping Lafayette by 30 points for the team title, 286 to 256. Western Albemarle finished third with 209 points.

Four different swimmers recorded multiple wins at the meet, including William Byrd’s Michael Craddock in the 200 IM (1:51.00, meet record) and 100 breast (57.60, meet record), William Byrd’s Khalil Fonder in the 100 fly (50.32, meet record) and 100 back (50.87, meet record), Rockbridge County’s Will Orrison in the 50 free (21.17, meet record) and 100 free (46.31, meet record) and Western Albemarle’s Remedy Rule in the 100 fly (53.20) and 100 back (54.58, meet record). Rule broke the meet record in prelims of the 100 fly with a 53.05.

James Monroe’s Brad Allison (200 free, 1:42.88), Cave Spring’s Emma Muzzy (200 IM, 2:07.16), York’s Alex Slayton (50 free, 23.99), Christiansburg’s Ronnie Piemonte (1-meter diving, 492.40), Blacksburg’s Pearl Hurst (1-meter diving, 425.85) and Lafayette’s Carter Kale (500 free, 4:36.01) also set individual 3A records during finals.

In relay action, Lafayette’s Carter Kale, Brett Huckstep, Conor Flannery and Deke Lueker kicked off the meet with a new 3A record of 1:36.35 in the 200 medley relay, cutting more than two seconds off the record they had established in prelims. Cave Spring’s Paige Assaid, Tessa Muzzy, Emma Muzzy and Maggie Harman followed with a record of their own in the girls’ 200 medley relay, as they touched in 1:47.43 to knock off their own 1:47.89 from 2014.

Kettle Run lowered the 3A record in the boys’ 200 free relay with Connor Webb, Aaron Tice, Nicholas Fallows and James Patrick knocking off York’s 1:29.23 with a 1:28.63. Lafayette capped the meet with another relay record, this time in the 400 free relay. Conor Flannery, Caleb Aman, Deke Lueker and Carter Kale swam a 3:14.03 to win by just .08 and cut four seconds off the 3A record of 3:18.25. Cave Spring’s Maggie Harman, Tessa Muzzy, Paige Assaid and Emma Muzzy finished off the meet with a 3:31.50 in the 400 free relay, taking five seconds off the previous record set by Cave Spring last year.
