West Virginia University picked up a verbal commitment from Philip Kay. Kay lives in Pickering, Ontario. He swims for North York Aquatic Club.

Kay swam the 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 400 IM at Canadian Olympic Trials in April. At that meet Kay gained valuable experience as a 400 IM A finalist.

At that meet his times were:

  • 200 Back 2:05.68
  • 200 Breast 2:20.96
  • 200 IM 2:04.65
  • 400 IM 4:25.97

Those convert to short course yards times of:

  • 200 Back 1:49.21
  • 200 Breast 2:02.35
  • 200 IM 1:48.07
  • 400 IM 3:50.06

Kay shared,

“I loved everything about the school. WVU is great both academically and athletically, and is a perfect fit for me. I think the team and program are amazing and can’t wait to be a part of that environment! Go Mountaineers!”

Assuming he makes a transition to short course yards, Kay should be a Big 12 scorer for the Mountaineers. He would have been a 400 IM A finalist last year. WVU only placed Nate Carr in the top eight in that event last year. He’d also be a 200 IM A finalist. Carr was joined by Jake Iotte in that final in 2016. If he swims the 200 backstroke or breaststroke as his day four event, Kay should also contribute A final points there as well.
