Albany McDonald, a distance swimmer from Portland, Texas, has signed with Wayland Baptist University to compete for the Pioneers.

WBU coach Alyson Hannan said McDonald’s focus is the 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650.

“Albany is hard-working, dedicated, and has great stroke mechanics,” Hannan said. “She is going to make an instant impact. All of her times are national ‘A’ cuts, and with her times she would be placed in the top 16 (in the NAIA) in the 500 and the 1,650 based on last year’s results.

“Since Albany’s times are already national ‘A’ cuts when she starts swimming, our goal is to qualify her early in the season so we can focus on getting in a top-placing spot.”

McDonald said she chose Wayland “because they offer a great swim program and it is affordable for me to attend. When I found that they provide a great nursing program, I knew WBU would be the perfect fit for me.”

McDonald is the Pioneer swim program’s second signed female and fifth overall recruit for next year’s squad. She joins sprinter Sarah Grace Stephenson of Round Rock; sprint freestyler Colton Wyatt of North Richland Hills; flyer, backstroker and freestyler Daric Sundeen of Golden, Colo.; and distance swimmer Alan Senn of Albuquerque, N.M.

“We are very excited to welcome Albany to the WBU swimming family,” Hannan said.

The Pioneers are ranked fourth in the NAIA Women’s Coaches’ Poll. WBU’s men also are ranked fourth, representing the highest each program has been ranked in their four-year history.
