AUCKLAND, New Zealand, May 14. THE fields are just about set for the FINA Water Polo World League Super Final to be held June 1-6 in Beijing, China (women) and June 11-16 in Chelyabinsk, Russia (men). The next-to-last group to earn their way into the Super Final was selected at the Asia/Oceania preliminary rounds which were held in Auckland, New Zealand May 9-14.

Added to the women’s field from the Asia/Oceania round were Australia and China. The two teams were 1-2 in the final rankings. Australia enjoyed a perfect 6-0 tournament, while China settled for two losses, both to Australia. In the beginning round, Australia edged China 15-13; in the final match, Australia defeated the Chinese 17-7. The two countries join Hungary, Italy, Russia and Spain, who qualified during the European qualifying round in March.

China came out of the men’s division with a perfect 4-0 record. Joining China in the Super Final will be Japan, who ended the tournament with a 2-2 mark. In the final match of the tournament, China scored 14 goals to host New Zealand’s 7. Hungary, Montenegro, Russia and Serbia already had punched their tickets to the Super Final from the European qualifying round March 29-30.

There are still four spots to be filled at the Super Final–two women’s teams and two men’s teams. These will be determined at the Americas preliminaries, which will take place May 24-27 at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, California. Teams from the USA, Canada and Brazil will vie for the two open places.
