Water Polo: Men’s World League European Preliminaries, Round 3

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 31. PRELIMINARY action continued Jan. 29-30 in various cities throughout Europe as teams attempt to qualify for the World League Super Series June 11-16.

The only home team to emerge victorious out of the five matches contested was Italy, who defeated Romania in Group C action Jan. 29 with a 11-5 score. The match took place in Civitavecchia, Italy. The other Group C match saw Hungary defeat a determined Russia squad, 10-7, in Volograd, Russia.

The only Group B match ended with a penalty shootout. Spain edged Germany, 13-12, in Stuttgart, Germany Jan. 30.

Both Group A contests took place Jan. 30. The reigning Olympic and World League champion Croatia team took down Greece 9-7 in Athens. Montenegro had an easy time of it in their victory over Turkey, 14-4, in Istanbul.

Montenegro leads Group A with 9 points, followed by Croatia (6), Greece (3) and Turkey (0). Serbia is far out in front with 6 points, with Spain second (2) and Germany third (1). In Group C, Hungary leads with 9 points, with Italy (6), Romania (2) and Russia (1) behind.

The next round will take place Feb. 1-2. Hungary will face Romania in Debrecen, Hungary; Feb. 1; Feb. 2 matches include Turkey vs. Greece in Istanbul, Turkey; Montenegro vs. Croatia in Kotor, Montenegro; Serbia-Germany in Novi Sad, Serbia; and Italy vs. Russia in Volograd, Russia.
