COLVILLE, Washington, September 29.  Last night, Spokane Waves’ Emma Schanz announced on Instagram that she’s headed to UCLA after her senior year of high school.

Schanz, the top-ranked swimming in Washington as well as the 13th-ranked recruit in the nation by CollegeSwimming.com, provides the Bruins with a legitimate threat in several events.

Her top-ranked swims are in the 100-yard back (53.94) and 200-yard backstroke (1:56.59) with a pair of stellar times from earlier this year.

Schanz also has a strong breaststroke with a 2:11.90 in the 200-yard breaststroke that allows her, along with her sizzling backstroke, to put together a nice IM.  She owns a 1:59.10 in the 200-yard IM from last winter.

Schanz definitely has an interesting background as she trains in a 20-yard hotel pool with her brother Dylan, in a story told by USA Swimming’s Mike Gustafson, even though she represents the Spokane Waves when she travels with the team.

“We have to hold each other accountable for getting up for practice in the morning,” Emma told Gustafson. “We don’t have a coach to get mad at us. It’s tough to motivate each other. You have to learn how to push yourself.”
