Virginia Tech Gets Rising Breaststroker Eric Delmonte From Maine

PORTLAND, Maine, October 3. VIRGINIA Tech got a verbal commitment this week from Maine resident Eric Delmonte, a breaststroker with plenty of potential.

Delmonte’s coach at the Portland Porpoises, Matt Baxter, confirmed Delmonte’s decision to Swimming World today, saying “he (Delmonte) is very excited.” Delmonte has become the team’s best swimmer, qualifying for the national championships at this summer’s sectional meet in Buffalo, N.Y., in the 200 breaststroke.

Delmonte made big strides this summer in long course breaststroke, posting lifetime bests of 1:07.43 and 2:22.64. All this was done while training in a four-lane, 25-yard pool in Portland. Baxter talked about training in such conditions, and what makes Delmonte a good swimmer, in a recent interview on “The Morning Swim Show.”

In short course yards, Delmonte has much room for improvement. His best times in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes currently stand at 58.62 and 2:03.85.
