NEW COMMIT: Maya Atkins has announced her verbal commitment to swim for Virginia Tech beginning in the fall. Atkins attends Douglas Freeman High School. She swims year round for Nova of Virginia Aquatics.

“I am excited to start the next chapter of my life as a Hokie! After meeting the coaches and learning more about the swim program, I knew that VT was the place for me. The coaches fully supported me all the way through the recruiting process along with my family, and that was another major deciding factor in my decision. Top notch academics and athletics are what I fell in love with at Tech. So, so thrilled to be a member of the team in the fall! Go Hokies!!”

Her top times include:

  • 100 Breast- 1:02.94
  • 200 Breast- 2:16.62
  • 100 Free- 51.89
  • 50 Free- 23.68

At this year’s ACC Championships it took a 1:02.51 to make the C final of the 100 breaststroke. The Hokies freshman Joelle Vereb was an A finalist (1:00.49). Senior Kelly Henry (1:01.95) was a C finalist. Atkins would also have been just outside scoring in the 200 breaststroke, where a 2:16.13 was 24th. The Hokies had two seniors score in the event. Atkins will find a great training partner in sophomores Baillie Cameron (2:16.93) and Erin Scott (2:17.96).
