Virginia Tech has added Samuel Törnqvist to the class of 2021. Törnqvist has been a member of the Swedish Junior National Team for the last three years.

He shared,

“I chose Virginia Tech because of the excellent balance between a high level of academics and swimming. The coaching staff at VT as well as the team made me feel very welcomed since day one as if I was already one of them. The incoming freshmen class and the juniors who have already committed make it clear that Virginia Tech is on the rise. I can’t wait to be a Hokie!”

Törnqvist won his first international medal in 2014 at the Nordic Championships with a bronze in the 400 IM. He improved to gold in the 200 IM at the 2015 edition of the meet.

Törnqvist has won over 25 individual medals at Swedish junior championships. He told Swimming World he is “still working towards bringing home even more during the summer’s championships.”

Among his best times (converted to SCY) are:

  • 100 Backstroke – 48.87
  • 200 Backstroke – 1:46.46
  • 100 Butterfly – 48.46
  • 200 Butterfly – 1:47.80
  • 200 IM – 1:47.80
  • 400 IM – 3:51.17

He currently sits just outside ACC scoring in the backstroke and butterfly events as well as the 400 IM. With continued improvement in Blacksburg, Törnqvist could soon be scoring for the Hokies.
