Virginia Swimming and Diving Adds Tennessee To 2015-2016 Schedule

Virginia swimming and diving head coach Augie Busch announced Wednesday (Sept. 9) the Cavaliers’ 2015-16 schedule, which includes two meets at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

“I am very excited about our schedule this year,” Busch said. “We have added Tennessee to a list of challenging non-conference opponents that include Penn State and Michigan. We wanted to add more racing in January, a critical time of year, and have done so with Notre Dame. This is a schedule that I believe will prepare us to be at our best at the right times.”

The Cavaliers will begin the season at home against Tennessee on Oct. 16. The Volunteer programs both finished in the top 15 nationally in 2015, with the women placing 11th and the men finishing 14th.

Virginia will face Big Ten foes Michigan and Penn State in a tri-meet for the second-consecutive season, this time in Ann Arbor, Mich., Oct. 31-Nov. 1. The four teams the Cavaliers will compete against all finished in the top 25 in 2015, including the Michigan men, who placed third.

The Cavaliers will close the fall portion of the season at the Georgia Fall Invitational Dec. 4-6. Last year at the same meet, UVa broke 11 school records.

Virginia will have a busy January, beginning with its final home meet of the season against ACC rival Notre Dame Jan. 8-9. The Cavaliers then travel to face Virginia Tech and Towson on Jan. 15-16 in Christiansburg, Va., before competing in away dual meets against NC State (Jan. 22) and North Carolina (Jan. 23).

The Cavalier women’s divers will compete against Richmond on Jan. 29, while both team’s divers will take part in the JMU Invite on Feb. 6.

Greensboro, N.C., will be the site for the ACC championships this season, starting with the women’s swimming and diving and men’s diving meet Feb. 17-20 and men’s swimming meet Feb. 24-27. In 2015, the Cavalier women won their eighth-consecutive conference title, while the men finished eighth. UVa will also send a few swimmers to the ECAC Championships in Annapolis, Md., Feb. 26-28.

The Virginia diving corps will compete for NCAA championship spots at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships March 7-9 in Annapolis, Md. Last season, the Cavaliers had two divers, JB Kolod and Becca Corbett, advance to the national meet for the first time. Corbett became the first Virginia female diver to qualify for the NCAA championships.

The NCAA championships will both be held in Atlanta, Ga., with the women’s meet March 16-19 and the men’s meet March 23-26. The Cavalier women placed fifth in 2014-15, their highest finish ever and Leah Smith captured NCAA titles in the 500 free and 1,650 free. The UVa men placed 33rd at the national meet a year ago.

Admission is free to all home meets at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
