Virginia Press Release

Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2013-14 season at Navy Friday afternoon (Oct. 25), with the women defeating Navy (250-50) and Yale (237-63), while the men were victorious against the Midshipmen (212-88).

The Cavalier women posted the top marks in all 16 events, while the UVa men finished first in 14 of 16 events.

“I’m very pleased with several things I saw today,” Virginia head coach Augie Busch said. “We were more engaged in our teammates’ swims (than the intrasquad meet) and had solid energy throughout the meet. We’re anxious to get back to practice to begin our final push toward the Ohio State Invite.

“There are numerous things to iron out and the upcoming quad meet will provide a great opportunity to race top-tier teams and continue our preparation to race fast in Columbus. We’re already excited for that meet.”

On the women’s side, freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won three events, including the 200m free (2:00.14), 400m free (4:13.63) and 800m free (8:32.47). Sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) claimed the 100m back (58.79) and 200m back (2:10.39) and freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) finished first in the 100m breast (1:09.77) and 200m breast (2:30.17).

Senior Parker Camp (Brentwood, Tenn.) picked up three event wins in the 200 free (1:49.11), 100 fly (55.00) and 200m fly (2:02.23), while classmate Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) touched first in the men’s 800m free (8:07.71) and 200m IM (2:06.69). Sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) swept the backstroke discipline, winning the 100m (58.79) and 200m (2:00.13).

Other event winners for the Cavalier men were seniors Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt. – 200m breast) and Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va. – 400m free) and junior Charlie Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y. – 50m free)

To open the meet, the women’s 200m medley relay of sophomore Bartholomew, Simon, Williamson and Lloyd won in a time of 1:52.96, while the men’s relay of seniors Jack Murfee (Nashville, Tenn.) and Grey and juniors Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Rommel placed first in 1:41.75.

In the last events of the meet, the UVa women’s 400m free relay of freshman Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom), Lloyd and seniors Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) and Rachel Naurath (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) touched first in 3:52.23, while the men’s team of Papendick, Camp, Dudzinski and senior Jonathan Buerger (Wesford, Pa.) won in 3:24.42.

Up next, the Cavaliers will host Penn State, Texas and West Virginia in a quad meet at the Aquatic and Fitness Center Nov. 8-9. The two swimming sessions will begin Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 9 at 10 a.m., while all of the diving will start at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8.

Navy Press Release

The six-time defending ACC-champion Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams posted victories over Navy Friday evening at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis. The Cavaliers recorded a 212-88 win in the men’s meet between the teams as well as a 250-50 win in the women’s meet. Additionally, Yale’s women’s team recorded a 188-112 win over the Mids.

Navy picked up a victory in the men’s 100 breaststroke as Marlin Brutkiewicz (Fr., Mobile, Ala.) posted a time of 1:02.98 to win the event, with teammate Sean Murphy (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) placing second in a time of 1:03.78. Navy’s Hugh Davison (Sr., Towson, Md.) also won the 100 free with a time of 51.93. His clocking gave him a nearly two-tenths of a second win over Virginia’s Matthew Lockman.

Jonathan DeBaugh (So., Conroe, Texas) placed second for Navy in both butterfly races during the meet. He first posted a time of 2:03.50 in the 200 fly, then touched the wall with a time of 55.76 in the 100 fly. Additional second-place showings by the Mids featured Luke Hoffer (Sr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) in the 200 breast (2:19.96) and Ben Freedman (Sr., Kennewick, Wash.) on the three-meter springboard (346.35).

“We were hoping to be a little closer to Virginia,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts. “Give all the credit to Virginia. They set the tone in the first few events.

“We had a lot of guys drop time from our intrasquad meet a few weeks ago, and I saw we were doing things better, technically, than we did last week at UMBC. Technically, I was pretty happy with what I saw.”

Highlighting the efforts for the Navy women’s team was Charlotte Meyer (Fr., Bethesda, Md.), who set a school record with her clocking of 2:19.69 in the 200 individual medley which placed her fourth in the race. That broke the previous school standard of 2:19.90 set by Laura Gorinski 10 months ago. Meyer would go on to post the No. 7 time in school history in the 200 backstroke (fifth place) with a time of 2:19.13.

Also posting a strong historical time for the Mids was Lauren Baguley (Sr., Hudsonville, Md.), whose clocking of 1:04.50 in the 100 backstroke (sixth place) is tied for the third-best time in school history. Colleen Randolph (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) was the top-placing Mid in a women’s event as she finished third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:38.76.

“There were some improvements from last week against UMBC, but the biggest thing for us to get healthy,” said Navy women’s swimming head coach John Morrison. “We have a lot of people banged up and we are not all together as a team. We are disappointed in the final score, but we saw some good things. Overall, though, we are not in a good place right now, but we will get there. This team will do the work needed to get to where we want to be.”

Both Navy teams will next be in competition Nov. 9 when they each travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to face American, Bucknell and Lafayette.
