Vintage Footage To Be Shown On The Queen Mary

Queen Mary, Long Beach, California. August 30. VINTAGE footage of classic open water swims will be shown at the 2012 Global Open Water Swimming Conference and the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California on September 21st and 22nd.

Professional races in Lake Michigan by Ted Erikson and Greta Andersen where they battled over 24 hours and 50 miles. “I remember seeing Ted in the hospital afterwards…it was a long way but we were both OK,” recalled 1948 Olympic champion Andersen who later went on to an outstanding professional marathon swimming career.

Solo swims like the first two-way crossing of a channel when Anderson completed a double-crossing of the Catalina Channel in 1958 in 26 hours 53 minutes (before Antonio Abertondo's first two-way of the English Channel in 1961 in 43 hours 10 minutes).

And the renowned professional English Channel races of the 1950s where footage was taken by helicopters amid the hoopla in the Channel will also be shown. All of these and more will be shown and discussed on board the Queen Mary by the people who were there in the water, and on the boats from the 1920s to the 2012 London Olympics.
