Viewmont, Skyline, Park City and Emery Win Team Titles at Utah High School Swimming Championships

PROVO – Viewmont (5A), Skyline (4A), Park City (3A) and Emery (2A) swept the boys’ and girls’ team titles last weekend at the Utah High School Swimming Championships, held at the BYU pool in Provo. Classification records fell in bunches in all four classes over the three days of racing.

5A Meet

Viewmont swept the 5A team titles, scoring 288 points in the girls’ meet to edge Lone Peak (285 points) by only three points. Brighton claimed third with 254.5 points. The same three teams placed in the top three in the boys’ meet, with Viewmont registering 337 points to Lone Peak’s 241 points and Brighton’s 208.

Herriman freshman Rhyan White set a new Utah and 5A state record in the girls’ 100 back, winning the event in 54.75 to take down Heidi Hausknecht’s 5A record of 56.66 from 1996 and Amelia Wolfgramm’s overall record of 56.11 from 2011. White actually lowered the records twice, first breaking both records in prelims with a 55.37 then re-setting both marks in finals.

Lone Peak’s Katie Smith took home two individual state titles, touching first in the 200 IM (2:08.20) and 100 fly (55.93). Riverton’s Abbey Sorensen also doubled, sweeping the sprint freestyle events with a 23.66 in the 50 and a 51.86 in the 100.

On the boys’ side, Brighton’s Brock Harries got to the wall first in the 50 free (21.64) and 100 free (47.28), while Cottonwood’s Jonah Simon registered two wins in the 200 IM (1:54.96) and 100 breast (58.71).

4A Meet

In the 4A meet, Skyline ran away with both the girls’ and boys’ team titles, winning both meets by a combined 168 points. The girls scored 330 points to top Highland (275 points) and Wasatch (181 points), while the boys picked up 321 points to easily outdistance Murray (208 points) and Kearns (204 points).

Skyline established two new 4A records at the meet, in the 200 and 400 free relays. In the shorter distance, McKay Chamberlain, Mathew Beseris, Max Trevino and Adam Shelton stopped the clock at 1:26.61 to cut more than seven tenths off Skyline’s own 4A record of 1:27.37, set in 2014. In the 400, Shelton, Trevino, Chamberlain and DA Steed posted a 3:11.48 to cut 45-hundredths off Mountain Crest’s 2013 record of 3:11.93.

Three double event winners emerged in the girls’ meet, with Highland’s Eva Gontrum capturing state titles in the 200 free (1:55.93) and 500 free (5:12.03) and teammate Zoe Phillips topping the 200 IM (2:06.61) and 100 back (57.17) timed finals. Wasatch’s Phebe James picked up 40 points for her team after sweeping the 50 free (23.98) and 100 free (52.41) state titles.

Mitchel Hawley of Woods Cross emerged from the meet with two first place trophies in hand, as he posted the fastest swims of the meet in the 200 IM (1:56.50) and 100 fly (52.03). Springville’s Connor Anderson proved himself as the top mid-distance swimmer at the meet with first place finishes in the 200 free (1:42.24) and 500 free (4:40.78). In addition to swimming on two record-breaking relays, Skyline’s Adam Shelton was perfect in his individual events with wins in the 50 free (21.15) and 100 back (51.97).

Utah 4A Swimming Championships – Results

3A Meet

Park City hoisted the girls’ and boys’ team trophies in 3A in dominating fashion. The girls won by nearly 300 points, posting 581 points to crush Cedar City (284 points) and Desert Hills (185 points). The boys scored 434.5 points to finish well ahead of Cedar City (257 points) and Juan Diego Catholic (240 points).

Park City kicked off the meet with a new 3A record in the girls’ 200 medley relay, with Katie Hale, Joelle Hess, Mara Selznick and Becca Selznick coming in at 1:48.24, more than six seconds ahead of second place. Later in the meet, Rozie Selznick, Blaire McDowell, Siena Senn and Alandra McDowell would give Park City a second 3A record in the 200 free relay, as the foursome posted a 1:40.39 to win the event.

Park City also lowered the 3A record in the boys’ 200 free relay, thanks to Vincent Hess, Ryan Graves, Lucas Hess and Jinwon Bailar’s 1:28.29. Bailar added an individual 3A record in the 100 back (52.05) shortly after anchoring the 200 free relay. Park City freshman Blaire McDowell followed with a 3A record of her own in the 100 breast, stopping the clock at 1:06.00. Park City set its sixth 3A record of the meet in the girls’ 400 free relay; Rozie Selznick, Siena Senn, Katie Hale and Becca Selznick posted a 3:37.67 to win the event by nearly 10 seconds.

Utah 3A Swimming Championships – Results

2A Meet

Emery High School topped the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the 2A championships, scoring 268.5 points on the girls’ side to better Grand County (211.5 points) and North Summit (199 points). On the boys’ side, Emery picked up 266 points to edge North Summit’s 241 and Rowland Hall’s 140.5. Eight 2A records fell at the meet, including two by Grand County’s Alexa Pierce.

Emery’s foursome of Devin Wilson, Kelven Childs, Daryl Guymon and Nate Gilbert started off the meet by lowering Summit Academy’s 2A record of 1:52.46 in the 200 medley relay by almost a full second with a 1:51.47. North Summit also broke the record, taking second in 1:51.76.

Grand County’s Alexa Pierce added another 2A record in the girls’ 50 free final, clocking a 25.55 to lower Ariel Fitch’s 25.79 from 2014. Later in the meet, she added another record to her resume with a 55.37 in the 100 free, breaking another Ariel Fitch record that had stood at 56.86.

In the boys’ 100 fly, two swimmers went under Jackson Knowles’ 2A record of 58.29, as Summit Academy’s Jacob Brook touched first in 55.81 and South Summit’s Dominic Stagg came in second at 57.62. North Summit’s Sam Crittenden, Trystin Hellander, Eisley Scholes and Jace Hirzel took a second off Rowland Hall’s 2A record of 1:38.17 in the boys’ 200 free relay, winning the championship final in 1:37.10.

North Summit’s Sam Crittenden bettered his own 2A record of 1:01.74 in the boys’ 100 back final with a 1:00.64, while Rowland Hall’s Kelsey Oliver took down Laryssa Guymon’s 1:11.76 in the girls’ 100 breast with a 1:11.33. North Summit’s Eisley Scholes capped the meet with a 1:08.17 in the boys’ 100 breast to erase Isaac Landau’s 1:09.76 from the record books.
