Blake Pieroni, a 2016 Olympian, earned his first individual international race after finishing second in the men’s 200 freestyle. After not even making the final at last year’s Olympic Trials, Pieroni dropped over a second from his previous best time tonight. Since making the Olympic team in the 400 freestyle relay, he has wanted nothing more than to compete individually for Team USA.

Distance swimmer Zane Grothe qualified to represent Team USA in Budapest after finishing third just behind Pieroni in the 200 freestyle. Grothe attributes his recent improvements in the shorter events to his growth and increasing strength.
