17 year old Claire Adams provided a jolt into the world of female backstrokers in San Antonio on Friday night when she swam a 59.58 to win the event at U.S. Nationals. Adams defeated a heat that included British National teamer Georgia Davies, Michigan’s Ali Deloof, and butterfly star Kelsi Worrell, and she clocked a time ranked ninth in the world for 2015.

Afterwards, Adams talked to Swimming World’s David Rieder about her two 100 back swims, where she dropped a combined second and a half on the day. She spoke about the pressures of going into a National final seeded first and how she felt clocking a time that would have made the finals at the World Championships. The soon-to-be high school senior also discussed her plans for the college recruiting season this fall.
