Vermont vs. Bryant

SMITHFIELD, Rhode Island, November 21. THE Vermont swimming and diving team improved to 7-1 on the season with a 160-100 win on the road over Bryant on Sunday afternoon. The Catamounts broke eight Bryant pool records in the process.

Four different Catamounts recorded multiple victories on the day, led by sophomore Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y.) who won three races. Gardner won the 400 IM (4:32.79) and 200 freestyle (1:55.43) in pool record times, while also winning the 500 free (5:10.56).

Junior Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C.) won both butterfly events in pool record times, taking the 100 (59.37) and led a 1-2-3 Vermont finish in the 200 (2:10.78), while senior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 (58.11) and 200 (2:06.15). Weaver's time in the 200 also set a new pool mark.

For the second straight week junior Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y.) won both the 100 (109.28) and 200 (2:28.21) breaststroke events, setting a pool record in the 200 in the process. Also breaking pool records were junior Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) in the 1,650 free with a time of 18:04.90 and the 800 freestyle relay team made up of Weaver, Pittman, Gardner and Heenan in 7:50.66.

Sophomore Abby Mundt (Madison, Wis.) wrapped up the Catamount victories by leading a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.29.

"I wanted our team to focus on racing and not on the clock and they did that today," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer. "Our first relay was disqualified and we found ourselves behind early, but they stayed focused and got the job done."

The Catamounts return to action on December 4 for their home opener when they host Yale, starting at 12 p.m.
