Venezuelan Open Championships: Albert Subirats Nips Octavio Alesi for 100 Fly Victory

MARICAIBO, Venezuela, May 19. THE Venezuelan Open Championships kept on churning with a third-day of long course meter competition taking place in Maricaibo.

Albert Subirats clipped Octavio Alesi in the men's 100 fly finale, 53.04 to 53.10. Both swims missed the FINA A cut of 52.36 to lock down a spot at the Olympics. The provisional cut of 54.19, however, was met by both swimmers with Venezuela getting to select a possible nominee throughout the process. Jesus Casanova took a distant third in 55.64.

Roberto Gomez claimed the men's 50 free title in 23.13, while Glen Sochackyi (23.32) and Jesus Lopez (23.33) earned second and third. Elimar Barrios won the women's 50 back crown in 30.89, while Maria Ramirez (31.51) and Nayrelis Caceres (32.23) rounded out the podium.

Alejandro Gomez earned the men's 1500 free victory in 15:52.45, while Andy Arteta took second in 16:18.46. Robert Barreto picked up third in 16:34.89. Daniela Victoria posted a 2:35.58 to win the women's 200 breast. Mercedes Toledo (2:36.58) and Larismar Arcila (2:41.58) placed second and third.

Jennifer Marquez captured the women's 200 free in 2:04.70. Wendy Rodriguez touched second in 2:05.03, while Andrea Garrido placed third in 2:06.09. Luis Rojas checked in with a 2:06.56 to win the men's 200 IM. Kenek Gil placed second in 2:07.05, while Eddy Marin finished third in 2:09.68. Isabella Paez secured the women's 200 fly title in 2:15.88. Paola Perez clipped Eliana Barrios, 2:17.91 to 2:18.08, for second-place honors.

Erick Perez, Luis Lovera, Albert Subirats and Daniele Tirabassi won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:52.31 with Subirats posting a 54.11 butterfly leg. Eugenia Sebastiani, Andrea Garrido, Isabella Paez and Jennifer Marquez topped the women's 400 free relay in 3:57.41.
