Chupkov Seals Breaststroke Double With 2:07.32 Over 200 At Russian Championships

Anton Chupkov completed the breaststroke double with victory by almost three seconds over 200m at the Russian Championships in Kazan.

There was another notable performance for 15-year-old Evgenia Chikunova in the 100 breaststroke while Daniil Shatalov and Mikhail Dovgaluk provided more evidence of Russian strength in the 4×200, including an anchor leg of 1:45.18 by the former in a club race.

Chupkov, the Olympic bronze medallist, had lowered his own national 100m record to 58.83 on Monday and he returned to the Aquatics Palace on Wednesday to take the 200m in 2:07.32.

Chupkov, who set the world record of 2:06.12 en-route to his second world title at the 2019 worlds, led from the off with an opening 50 of 29.64. His splits thereafter were metronomic: 32.92/32.20/32.56.

Alexander Palatov and Ilya Khomenko shared the runners-up places as they did over 100m but with the positions reversed.

Palatov was second in 2:10.22 with Khomenko moving from fifth to third on the final 5o in 2:10.52.

Chikunova Goes 1:06; Shatalov Underlines Russian Strength

Chikunova’s star continues to rise with the teenager winning the 100m breaststroke with some ease.

Out in 31.81 and back in 34.82 to touch in 1:06.63 – exactly a second quicker than the time that secured bronze at the 2019 European Junior Championships.

It meant double gold so far in Kazan for Chikunova following her 50m victory with the silver medallist over the one-length race Maria Temnikova again second in 1:07.28.

Olympic silver medallist and Russian record holder Yulia Efimova is not competing in Kazan because of travel and quarantine measures applied in light of the pandemic which means she did not travel from her California base.

Shatalov anchored a Moscow club 4×200 quartet to victory in 1:45.18 – swifter than Martin Malyutin’s time of 1:45.42 that guided Russia to second at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju.

Dovgaluk had swum the lead-off in 1:46.39 before Alexander Egorov (1:48.38) and Nikita Danilov (1:48.41) handed over to Shatalov who brought them home in 7:08.36.

Ivan Kuzmenko won the 50 free in 22.21 – with 0.15 separating the first three – ahead of Daniel Markov (22.28) and Eugene Sedov (22.36).

Daria Vaskina won the 50 fly in 26.25, Valeria Salamantina won the women’s 400 free in 4:10.58 and Anna Chernysheva took the 200IM in 2:14.15.

Grigory Tarasevich added the 50 back to the 100 title he won on Monday in 24.77.

Andrei Minakov headed the men’s 50 fly semis in 23.05 ahead of world silver medallist Oleg Kostin (23.30) with Daria Vaskina leading the women’s 50 back semis in 28.79.
