Utah vs. UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, January 29. THE UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split a Mountain West Conference dual meet with Utah on the Rebels’ Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Buchanan Natatorium. The 16th-ranked Rebel men claimed their third overall MWC regular season championship with a 179.5-111.5 win over the Utes, which improved their record to a perfect 5-0 in the league, and 9-1 overall. UNLV’s women meanwhile fell to 7-8, 3-5 in the conference after suffering a 159-141 loss to Utah.

The Rebels won a total of 11 of the 14 swimming events in the men’s meet, which included a sweep of both relays. UNLV began the day with a first-place performance in the 200 medley relay, thanks to the relay squad of David Seiler, Andrew Morrell, Steven Nelms and Cody Roberts that touched the wall in 1:29.13. Kier Maitland then posted victories in the next two events, winning the 1000 free in 9:31.40 and the 200 free in 1:40.52 and added a victory later on in the 500 free (4:32.60).

Other individual event winners for the Rebels included Seiler in the 100 back (50.12), David Szele in the 100 breast and Nelms in the 50 free (20.30). Kyle Virva and Nelms tied for first in the 100 free (45.89), Morrell placed first in the 200 breast (2:03.85) and Roberts won the 100 fly (48.35). The meet ended with Nelms, Calan Eldridge, Seiler and Szele winning the 400 free relay in 3:02.40.

For the UNLV women, the Rebels stayed within range of the Utes for the entire meet despite recording only four first-place finishes. UNLV went 1-2 in the 1000 free, with Jessica Heim winning in 10:35.88 and Marley Prothero placing second in 10:37.49. The Rebels also took the top two spots in the 50 free, with Megan Clark winning in 23.60 and Maddison Rousell just .04 seconds behind for second place. A sweep of the top three also happened in the 200 back, with Dannica Brennan winning in 2:03.32, Brittany Ozar placing second (2:03.40) and Anja Crawford in third (2:04.80). The final win was in the 200 IM, with Ozar posting a time of 2:05.84.

UNLV’s next competition will be at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships, held in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Feb. 23-26.
