Utah vs. Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona, November 9. THE Utah men's swimming and diving team lost to Arizona State on Friday. The Utes swam tough against one of the best programs in the nation but eventually fell to the Sun Devils 184-110. The meet marked head coach Greg Winslow's first dual meet against his former school. Winslow coached for Arizona State as an assistant for four years before coming to Utah.

Utah got an up close look at some of the best swimmers in the nation and didn't back down. The Utes got great times from all swimmers as several athletes posted career best times in the meet.

Rick Mason had a career best time finishing second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:34.70, he would also place second in the 500 free (4:38.68). Vlas Lezin set a career best in the 200 back, winning the event with a time of 1:51.76. Thomas Ekstrom placed second in the 200 free (1:42.45)..

Marco Ferraro won the 500 free with his time of 4:38.68. Garret Beaman added second-place finishes in the 100 back (51.19), 50 free (21.28) and 100 free (46.62). John Baque finished second in the 200 breast in a time of 2:06.96.

The Utes finished the night with the 400 free relay team of Tanner Folster, George Evans, Beaman and Ferraro placing second with a time of 3:04.65, which was two seconds faster than last year's time at the conference championships.

"I'm so proud of our team," comments Winslow. "For us to go out there and have those kinds of races against such a good team shows a great deal about our team. Our men showed great character and that they would continue to fight even when the result is no longer in doubt."

Both the men and women will be in action against UNLV on Saturday, November 10, at the Ute Natatorium. The meet will be at 2:00 p.m.

Special thanks to Utah for contributing this report.
