USC Swimming Sweeps UC San Diego

USC resumed the 2021-22 season in dominant fashion, winning 27 out of 28 events against UC San Diego on Saturday (Jan. 15) at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

Five Trojans won twice each, as seniors Isabelle Odgers, Calypso Sheridan and Laticia Transom as well as junior Nicole Pavlopoulouand freshman Caroline Pennington each posted a pair of wins.

Both USC squads advance to 4-0 on the season. The Women of Troy defeated the Tritons women’s squad 210-52, while the men won 195.5-65.5.

The Women of Troy swept the relays, opening the meet with a win in the 200y medley (Sheridan, Pavlopoulou, Genevieve Sasseville, Anicka Delgado – 1:41.95) and closing the meet with a 400y free relay victory (Delgado, Adair Sand, Aela Janvier, Makenna Turner – 3:27.64).

USC newcomer Pennington impressed during her first meet as a Trojan, taking first in the women’s 1000y free (9:56.73) and later returning to take the 500y free (4:53.46).

Senior Transom kicked off the meet with a win for the Trojans in the 200y free (1:47.18) before topping the 100y free (49.97), just a short while later.

USC cleaned house in the breaststroke events, claiming both the 100 and 200 for the men and the women. Pavlopoulou won the 100 (1:03.06) as well as the 200 (2:16.16). On the men’s side, Trent Pellini (55.91) and Mario Koenigsperger (2:02.53) emerged victorious in the 100 and 200, respectively.

The breaststroke and IM specialist, Isabelle Odgers, championed both the 100y fly (54.29) and 100y back (55.95) for USC. Fellow senior Sheridan rounded out the afternoon with a pair of wins, coming from the 50y free (23.32) and 200y IM (1:59.48).

USC distance specialists were on display today, as junior Ivan Puskovitch (9:30.75) claimed the 1000y free and senior Victor Johansson (4:29.85) won the 500.

USC’s Artem Selin and Thomas Finello led the way for USC in the men’s splash and dash events, with Selin taking the 50y free (19.89) and Finello claiming the 100 (44.78).

The USC men closed out the afternoon with a win in the 400y free relay as Selin, Ben DillardVaggelis Makrygiannis and Billy Cruz Zuniga combined for first (2:59.69).

USC DIVING
USC divers were also in action at the Bruin Diving Invitational Saturday. Trojan George Korovin took first on men’s platform with a combined 682.40, 311.45 coming from prelims.

Junior All-American Nike Agunbiade led the Women of Troy on 3-meter, taking eighth with 597.35. She was one of four Trojans to make the 3-meter final with Maddie Huitt finishing 10th (585.80), Farrah Volpintesta (552.40) settling in at 14th and freshman Grace Lee (529.85) rounding out the top-15.

Action concludes Sunday (Jan. 16) at the Spieker Aquatics Center with women’s platform and men’s 1-meter.
