USA Women Open FINA Women’s Water Polo World League Super Final With 11-9 Defeat Of Greece

LA JOLLA, California, June 29. THE USA Women's National Team opened the 2010 FINA World League Super Final with an 11-9 defeat of Greece thanks to three goals from Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, CA/NYAC) and 13 saves from Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/NYAC). Next up for Team USA will be a meeting with Australia at 7pm pst on Tuesday evening.

As for this match the United States were in front for the majority opening up a 3-2 lead after the first quarter thanks to scores from Annika Dries (Laguna Beach, CA/SET), Tanya Gandy (San Diego, CA/SD Shores) and Lolo Silver (Long Beach, CA/NYAC). In the second quarter it was more from two meters as Craig sandwiched two of her scores around a tally from Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA/NYAC) and at intermission it was 6-5 in favor of Team USA.

The Greeks would not go quietly staying in the match throughout the second half. The red, white, and blue would create some distance getting a tally from Elsie Windes (Portland, OR/Tulatin Hills), then another from Craig, and they'd cap the period with Lauren Wenger (Long Beach, CA/NYAC) tally for a 9-6 advantage going to the fourth.

In the final frame it would be more of the same as the United States would make enough moves to keep Greece from coming all the way back. Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Diablo) got on the board with her first goal, and Wenger added another to push the advantage out to 11-8. A late goal from Greece proved to not figure in the result and it was 11-9 the final in favor of the United States.
