USA Women Defeat Canada 10-6 To Avenge Earlier Loss

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, May 21. THE USA Women's National Team avenged a loss to Canada this past Monday with a 10-6 victory earlier today at the FINA World League Prelims in Puerto Rico. Thanks to two goals each from Ashley Grossman (Santa Monica, CA/LA Water Polo) and Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA/NYAC) the USA team was backed by a strong first quarter en route to the victory. Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/NYAC) went the distance in the cage discarding 11 shots.

The United States stormed out of the gates with a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back from there. Canada would draw to 5-2 at halftime but the United States answered the bell in the third quarter with two more goals to just one from the Canadians for a 7-3 lead headed to the fourth. In the final stanza Canada looked to rally scoring three goals but they were answered by three goals from Team USA to end in a final score of 10-6.

Along with Grossman and Mathewson, Erika Figge (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/SET), Kiley Neushul (Goleta, CA/Santa Barbara WP), Jillian Kraus (Tustin, CA/NYAC), Tanya Gandy (San Diego, CA/SD Shores), Michelle Stein (Palm Desert, CA/NYAC), and Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Diablo) all chipped in with a score in the well-balanced effort.

The red, white, and blue went 3/7 on power plays while Canada was just 3/11. Canada was able to convert their lone penalty shot attempt.

"We came here not concerned with the result but we're happy with how we played today," said USA Head Coach Adam Krikorian. "Our 5-on-6 defense is getting better as the tournament progresses. Overall, we had a better defensive effort."

Team USA will be back in action tomorrow against Puerto Rico at 5:00pm est.
