USA Swimming, the National Governing Body for swimming, announced on Monday that it will send American athletes to compete at the 2023 LEN (European Swimming Federation) U23 Championships, held August 11-13 in Dublin.

The 2023 LEN European U23 Championships is the first international competition opportunity for USA Swimming athletes that serves specifically the 19-23 age group since 2019.

“International competition experience is vital to a developing swimmer’s progression,” USA Swimming National Team Managing Director Lindsay Mintenko said. “This meet fits really well in the quad as we prepare for Paris. We’re appreciative of the opportunity to compete at the inaugural U23 Championships.”

Announced in December 2022, Swim Ireland was awarded inaugural host responsibilities for the LEN European U23 Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre (NAC) at the Sport Ireland Campus. Dublin last hosted international championship competition in 2018 with the World Para Swimming European Championships and the 2003 European Short Course Swimming Championships.

“(USA Swimming athletes competing) is very important because this helps to validate the competition, by bringing one of the most powerful swimming teams in the world to Dublin,” LEN President Antonio Silva said. “This is the first edition of an innovative competition with different events and dynamics so I think it’s very good for aquatics, U23 swimmers, for the hosts in Dublin.”

Athletes aged 19-23 (born 2000-04, as of Dec. 31, 2023) are eligible to compete in Dublin. For the inaugural edition of the U23 Championships, each Federation may enter one competitor per event who is aged 14-18 (born 2005-09, as of Dec. 31, 2023) as part of its four-strong competitor line-up.
