USA Swimming Short Course Nationals: Dagny Knutson Threatens American Record, Nathan Adrian Shines

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, December 3. THE first evening of competition at the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals featured a run at an American record by Dagny Knutson and several remarkable swims by Nathan Adrian.

ASK's Dagny Knutson cruised in the women's 500 free with a near-American record time of 4:31.18. She finished less than a second off Katie Hoff's 2007 standard of 4:30.47, and was under record pace through 300 yards. Hoff, now representing FAST in California, settled for second in 4:37.33, while Southern California's Katinka Hosszu earned third in 4:40.87.

Club Wolverine's Peter Vanderkaay easily won the men's 500 free with a time of 4:12.60. Southern California's Clement Lefert snared second in 4:19.39, while teammate Povazsay grabbed third in 4:21.55.

California's Amanda Larson, Colleen Fotsch, Erica Dagg and Liv Jensen won the women's 200 free relay in 1:31.64. Southern California's Lili Shiota, Lyndsay DePaul, Katherine Shumway and Joan Christel Simms finished second in 1:32.06. Palo Alto Stanford's Madeline Schaefer, Jasmine Tosky, Sarah Liang and Julia Ama took third in 1:32.21.

Nathan Adrian led the way in the men's 200 free relay with a sterling time of 19.11 as the lead leg for California's Graeme Moore, Guy Barnea and Josh Daniels, who won in a meet-record time of 1:18.13. SwimMAC's Joseph Skuba, Cullen Jones, Kyle Cormier and Nick Thoman placed second in 1:18.18, while Southern California's Emmett Walling, Jeff Daniels, Lefert and Povazsay earned third in 1:19.77.

FAST's Ariana Kukors won the women's 200 IM in a time of 1:55.40. Southern California's Katinka Hosszu picked up second in 1:56.11, while SwimMAC's Justine Mueller touched third in 1:56.19.

Longhorn's Eric Shanteau cruised in the men's 200 IM with a winning effort of 1:44.05. Michigan's Andre Schultz finished second in 1:45.67, while Florida's Rexford Tullius took third in 1:46.19. Notably, Trojan's Hidemasa Sano won the B final in 1:44.72.

SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir cleared 22 seconds in the women's 50 free splash-and-dash with a winning time of 21.90. Trojan's Jessica Hardy placed second in 22.04, while Kara Lynn Joyce garnered third in 22.29.

Adrian then put on a show in the men's 50 free with a blistering time of 19.08. He finished just a bit off his American record of 18.71 set last March. Jones finished second in 19.46, just beating California's William Copeland (19.47).

The 400 medley relays closed the night. California's Barnea, Nolan Koon, Moore and Adrian raced to victory in the men's event with a 3:11.00. Adrian dropped a ridiculous anchor time of 41.16 to secure the win. Cal's B team of Mathias Gydesen, Nicholas Ferrif, Tom Shields and Daniels touched second in 3:13.65, while USC's James Lendrum, Dillon Connolly, Lefert and Povazsay placed third in 3:13.88.

Cal's Dagg, Caitlin Leverenz, Amanda Sims and Jensen grabbed the women's crown in 3:37.09, while USC's Shiota, Jessica Schmitt, Hosszu and DePaul touched second in 3:38.58. UCLA's Isabell Fischer, Brittany Beauchan, Lindsey Marchand and Emily Andelson finished third in 3:40.06.
