USA Swimming Sectionals, Mount Hood: Tyler Messerschmidt Posts Double-Podium Performance

MOUNT HOOD, Oregon, July 24. THE last night of action at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Mount Hood featured a podium double from YMCA Westside's Tyler Messerschmidt as long course meter swimming closed.

DU Hilltopper Mackenzie Stein, 16, won the women's 200 IM in 2:19.08, while Mount Hood's Laura Miller took second in 2:20.30. Lake Oswego's Karen Turner, 16, touched third in 2:20.59. Messerschmidt claimed the men's 200 IM in 2:06.85. Phoenix's Daniel Hatfield placed second in 2:08.17, while Tucson Ford's Juan Flores took third in 2:08.27.

DU Hilltopper Paige Newell hit the wall in 17:17.62 to win the women's 1500 free, while Boulder's Amanda Richey, 14, (17:20.02) and Corvallis' Sloan Storie (17:24.67) completed the top three. Colorado Springs' Patrick Scally snagged the men's 1500 free in 15:59.20. Mission Aurora's John Martens, 16, finished second in 16:03.24, while The Dolphins' Cameron Stitt, 15, rounded out the top three in 16:12.01.

Roseburg's Kaylin Bing raced to victory in the women's 50 free with a 26.10. Swim Utah's Natalie Edge took second in 26.22, while Boise YMCA's Stephanie North touched third in 26.24. Tucson Ford's Masayu Kishida placed first in the men's 50 free with a 22.67, while Messerschmidt earned his second podium of the night with a second-place 23.25. Phoenix's Michael Branning grabbed third in 23.39.
