USA Swimming Sectionals, Mount Hood: Close Calls Featured

MOUNT HOOD, Oregon, July 19. SEVERAL close finished were featured during the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Mount Hood tonight.

The night began with an incredibly close finish in the women's 200 IM. Elena Karpeeva of King surfaced triumphant with a time of 2:20.70, while Missy Franklin, 13, of the Colorado Stars finished second in 2:20.72. Lauren Hill, 15, of Salmon Bay was also in the mix with a third-place 2:20.76.

Chris Good followed with a win in the men's 200 IM. He touched in 2:06.77, while Nicholas Brunger of Denver (2:09.49) and Jon Banker of Washington (2:09.62) rounded out the top three.

Amber McDermott, 15, of Salmon Bay topped the women's 1500 free with a time of 17:00.65, while Ashley Daly of Washington finished second in 17:01.50. Bonnie Brandon, 14, of MACS took third in 17:10.04.

Blake Lewkowitz of the Arizona Marlins claimed the title in the men's 1500 free with a time of 16:05.26. Marcus Guttmann of Lobo placed second in 16:16.93, while Ian Wheeler, 16, of Tacoma pocketed third in 16:22.00.

On the flipside of the distance spectrum, Natalie Edge of Crimson Aquatics touched out Franklin, 26.37 to 26.40, in the women's 50 free. Madeline Rovira of RallySport snared third in 26.46.

Evan Bernier of Washington and Troy Davidson of Bellevue tied for the men's 50 free win with matching 23.92s. Danny Recordon of Tualatin Hills placed third right behind in 23.94.
