USA Swimming Sectionals, Minneapolis: Third Night Features Close Calls

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, July 24. THE third night of long course meter swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals in Minneapolis, Minn., featured several races coming down to the final 15 meters.

Cedar Rapids' Katharine Anton, 15, won the women's 200 back in 2:16.72, just a second off her meet record of 2:15.95 from last year. Westmont's Kelly Ryan finished second in 2:17.69, while Minnesota's Castina Wabeka earned third in 2:18.02. Rochester's Brian Kiel grabbed the men's 200 back title in 2:06.05. Tucson Ford's Peter Stacy took second in 2:07.30 with Badger's Andrew Teduits taking third in 2:07.58.

Minnesota went 1-2 in the women's 400 free. Megan Braun won in 4:19.35 with Courtney Veerman finishing second in 4:21.50. Star's Lauren Weis completed the top three in 4:21.55. Minnesota's Michael Holmes topped the men's 400 free in 3:58.06. Hawkeye's Paul Gordon touched second in 3:59.61 with Wisconsin's Jeffrey Morris claiming third in 4:05.60.

Aquajets' Abigail Duncan touched out Minnesota's Molly Belk, 1:10.77 to 1:10.95, for the women's 100 breast win. Patriot's Emily Fogle placed third in 1:11.23. Minnesota's Rob Schnitzler won the men's 100 breast in 1:03.43, while Wildcat's Alex Tyler finished second in 1:04.05. Peoria Area's Matthew Elliott earned third in 1:04.16.

Academy Bullets' Olivia Scott downed Wildcat's Alisa Finn, 1:00.48 to 1:00.85, in the women's 100 fly. Minnesota's Kaylee Jamison grabbed third in 1:00.94. Schroeder YMCA's Kevin Baseheart snatched the men's 100 fly crown in 54.69, while Minnesota's Alex Wold took second in 54.97. Wildcat's Christopher Doman rounded out the podium in 55.63.
