USA Swimming Sectionals, Federal Way: KING Posts Strong Evening

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 14. THE fourth night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Federal Way, Wash., featured some impressive swims all around. KING Aquatics, however, claimed the bulk of the best times.

KING's Margaret Hoelzer raced to a winning time of 52.73 in the women's 100-yard back to begin the night. The time, however, just missed teammate Ariana Kukors' meet record of 52.61 set as the top seed during prelims. Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin finished second in 53.65. Silver Fin Tyler Messerschmidt kept putting together a strong meet with a winning readout of 49.01 in the men's 100-yard back.

Salmon Bay's Amber McDermott smashed the meet record in the women's 500-yard free with a time of 4:40.23. The readout wiped out the 4:44.86 set by Kukors in 2007. Sun Devil's CJ Nuess took the men's 500-yard free in 4:25.63, just short of the 4:25.22 meet record set by Sandy Blythe way back in 1982.

KING's Megan Jendrick gave Tara Kirk's American record of 57.77 in the women's 100-yard breast a bit of a run, but wound up taking the title in 58.78. Kukors put together another incredible prelim swim as she obviously had somewhere to be this evening (a final at the University of Washington) when she set the meet record with a swift 58.62. StingRay Garren Riechel snagged the men's 100-yard breast meet record with a 54.95. The swim bettered the 55.04 set by Scott Usher in 2006.

KING's Lindsay Marchand gave her club another women's title on the night with a 52.86 in the women's 100-yard fly. This, of course, came after Kukors rocked prelims with a meet-record effort of 52.52. Tri-City Channel's Cody Roberts took home the men's 100-yard fly crown in 48.18.

KING's Marchand, Chelsea Bailey, Andie Taylor and Scarlet Cann won the women's 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:21.00. The effort eclipsed the 3:22.51 meet record set by KING back in 2007. Meanwhile, Bellevue's Troy Davidson, Murray Longbotham, Ethan Hallowell and Keenan Natyzak captured the men's 400-yard free relay in 3:01.75. The swim beat the meet record of 3:02.69 set by South Snohomish back in 1992.
