USA Swimming Sectionals, East Meadow: Second Night Features Several Touch Outs

EAST MEADOW, New York, March 7. THE second night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in East Meadow, N.Y. ended with several close calls and exciting finishes.

An exciting match-up of 15-year-olds occurred in the women's 200 free with Long Island Aquatic Club's Emily Kelly downed Elizabeth Beisel of Bluefish, 2:02.59 to 2:02.69. The men's 200 free also provided a thrilling finish with Kevin McCarthy, 17 of ATAC surfacing triumphant with a time of 1:54.16. Ian Clark (1:54.62), Eric Ress (1:54.75) and Ryan Feeley (1:54.85) all touched under 1:55.

A pair of teammates from Bluefish battled each other in the women's 100 breast with Laura Sogar, 16, touching first in 1:11.54, while Kristen Connors, 17, took second in 1:12.61 just ahead of Annie Zhu, 13, of the Twisters (1:12.88).

In the men's 100 breast, Pavel Buyanov cruised to victory in 1:05.53, well ahead of second-place Chris Higgins, 15, who finished in 1:07.63.

In the 100 fly events, Alex Forrester, 16, of Bluefish captured the women's title in 1:01.53, while Peter Geissinger of the Darien Piranhas claimed the men's crown in 56.18.

Beisel bounced back in the women's 400 IM as she dominated with a time of 4:51.78, while Andrew Gemmell, 17, snapped up the men's 400 IM title in 4:22.98.
