USA Swimming Sectionals, Buffalo: First Night Complete

BUFFALO, New York, August 6. THE first night of long course meter swimming came to a close at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Buffalo.

Team Pittsburgh's Briana Emig opened the first night with a winning time of 17:05.02. She downed Taylor Sostarecz, who finished second in 17:14.02. Gators' Lauren Gray placed third in 17:18.97. Long Island's Sean Lane cruised in the men's 800 free with a time of 8:19.76. Jack Zierenberg touched second in 8:27.06, while SoNoCo's Andy Ahlberg wound up third in 8:28.54.

Gators' Ali Horn topped the women's 200 IM in 2:19.07 with Star's Courtney Otto (2:20.49) and Long Island's Erica Derlath (2:21.01) claiming second and third. Longhorn's Bryan Collins scorched the men's 200 IM in 2:01.47. SwimQuest's Michael Covert finished a distant second in 2:07.78. Team Pittsburgh's Jon Buchanan touched third in 2:08.37.

Mason Makos' Amanda Kendall raced to the win in the women's 100 free with a 56.95. Curl-Burke's Meredith Cavalier snared second in 57.39, while Gators' Lauren Hines took third in 57.72. Snow's Matt McLean claimed the men's 100 free in 50.62, while Collins picked up his second medal of the day with a 51.11 for second. Schenectady's Spencer Booth completed the top three in 51.94.

Curl-Burke's Ellyn Baumgardner dominated the women's 100 breast in 1:09.96 with Team Pittsburgh's Laura Barnes finishing second in 1:13.18. Gators' Keri Sink earned third in 1:13.28. Mason's Eric Knight captured the men's 100 breast in 1:04.78. Cheshire Y's Austin Mizzell snagged second in 1:05.31 with Curl-Burke's Kyung Park rounding out the podium in 1:05.65.
