USA Swimming Sectionals, Bakersfield: Photo Finishes On Offer

BAKERSFIELD, California, July 19. A variety of photo finishes were on offer tonight at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Bakersfield.

Meghan Hawthorne, 16, touched out Kirstie Chen, 16, of La Mirada, 2:19.05 to 2:19.15, in the women's 200 IM, while Kate Dwelley of Terrapins finished third in 2:20.42.

Chris Quemena of Swim Pasadena won his own touch-out triumph in the men's 200 IM, beating Cody Miller, 16, of Clark County, 2:06.91 to 2:06.98. Matt Benoit rounded out the top three in 2:07.45.

The splash-and-dash races followed. Hannah Wilson downed California teammate Erica Dagg, 25.97 to 26.66, while Whitney Campbell of De Anza Cupertino touched just behind in third with a 26.67 in the women's 50 free.

Gabe Woodward snatched the men's 50 free with a 22.62, while Vladimir Morozov (23.27) and Jeffrey Daniels (23.47) touched second and third, respectively.

Samantha Shellem, 16, of La Mirada Armada claimed the women's 400 free in 4:15.48, while Chelsea Chenault, 13, of Terrapins finished second in 4:18.11. Tristin Baxter, 16, placed third in 4:25.20.

La Mirada Armada won again, this time with John Mendoza touching out Tom Shields, 17, of Nova, in the men's 400 free, 3:58.57 to 3:58.67. Greg Harper, 16, of Walnut Creek took third in 4:02.31.

De Anza Cupertino's Whitney Campbell, Chelsea Fong, Hayes Hyde and Madeline Schaefer won the women's 400 free relay in 3:51.96, while the Bakersfield Swim Club team of Woodward, Chase Kreitler, Nathan Vizcarra and Kevin Bartell claimed the men's 400 free relay in 3:31.18.
