USA Swimming Sectionals, Austin: Longhorn Continues to Reign

AUSTIN, Texas, July 18. LONGHORN kept on rolling at its home pool during the third night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Austin.

Kirsty Coventry opened the evening with a Longhorn 1-2 in the women's 100 back. Coventry won in 1:02.92, while teammate Rebecca Orr finished second in 1:03.84. Ellen Lobb, 16, of Fleet took third in 1:04.69.

Cole Cragin, 17, of Fleet then touched out Jon Berrettini of Mustangs, 57.28 to 57.35, in the men's 100 back. Bryan Collins of Longhorn claimed third in 58.25.

Spindrift Beck, 17, of Mustangs benefitted from Micah Lawrence's DQ in the women's 200 breast. While Lawrence finished first, the DQ gave Beck the win with a 2:38.56. Erica Dittmer, 16, of Premier (2:38.78) and Kier Thornhill of Lakeside (2:41.27) rounded out the top three.

Bryan Snowden of Aggie won the men's 200 breast in 2:21.66, while Lawson Floyd took second in 2:24.59. Christian Schurr of West Austin placed third in 2:24.72.

In a close finish, Longhorn's Tanica Jamison touched out Aggie's Triin Aljand, 1:00.38 to 1:00.51, in the women's 100 fly. Jacqueline Martin-Lacey of Longhorn wound up third in 1:02.57.

Longhorn went 1-2 in the men's 100 fly. Matt Donch won in 53.49, while Hill Taylor touched second in 53.84. Camilo Becerra of Fort Worth earned third in 54.51.

Longhorn followed that up with another top-two sweep in the women's 400 free. Susana Escobar won in 4:14.15, while Nikki White placed second in 4:17.35. Kristen Heiss of the Aggies wrapped up third in 4:17.59.

The Woodlands' Sean Leneave claimed the men's 400 free in 4:04.67. Caleb Veazey, 17, of the Mustangs (4:07.05) and Andrew Keily of Fleet (4:07.08) had a barn-burner for second.

The 400 free relays completed the night. Texas Gold's Lacey Bobo, Lawrence, Cassie Cunningham and Sherrill Thompson won the women's race in 3:56.47. Meanwhile, the Mustang foursome of Nate Clark, John Huddleston, Jack Dwyer and Clint Hallum claimed the men's crown in 3:32.16.
