USA Swimming Picks San Juan as Pre-Olympic Training Camp Location

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, November 5. AS first reported by Inside The Games, USA Swimming has chosen San Juan, Puerto Rico as the pre-Olympic training camp location for the 2016 Rio Games.

USA Swimming’s national team director Frank Busch submitted the choice recently to the Olympic International Organizing Committee, putting Team USA’s swimming squad within a United States territory during its initial staging camp prior to heading to Rio in 2016.

In 2012, the U.S. used the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as its first staging camp before heading to Vichy, France then London as the team continued to unify and adjust to the same time zone for competition. It’s an important part of the process.

In 2008, USA Swimming staged in Palo Alto, Calif., before heading over to Beijing, China for the 2008 Beijing Games. This proved to be one of the most volatile training camps in the history of USA Swimming with Jessica Hardy’s positive drug test, Eric Shanteau’s battle with testicular cancer, Dara Torres’ personal coach Michael Lohberg falling ill all against the backdrop of Michael Phelps’ final preparations before making his historic run at eight gold medals.
