USA Swimming Grand Prix Returning to Arizona With Mesa Aquatics as Host

MESA, Arizona, June 4. THE USA Swimming Grand Prix will return to Arizona in April 2013 for a four-year stint, specifically to the growing city of Mesa on the eastern edge of Phoenix.

Mesa Aquatic Club will host a meet on the Grand Prix circuit through 2016, the team announced today. Though the specific pool location has not been announced, the team has two identical world-class facilities at its disposal: Kino Aquatic Center and Skyline Aquatics Center.

“We are incredibly honored that USA Swimming has entrusted our organization to host what we consider to be one of the 'crown jewels' of swimming events,” Paul Smith, Mesa Aquatics CEO, told Swimming World. “The collaboration of MAC, The City of Mesa, the CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) and Mesa Public Schools has allowed us to fully maximize two of the finest facilities in the country. We look forward to putting on an incredible event April 11-13 and for the following three years leading up to the 2016 Olympics!”

In addition to regularly hosting the state high school swimming and diving championships, Mesa and Mesa Aquatic Club welcomed more than 1,000 Masters swimmers last year for the spring nationals.

Phoenix was a stop on the Grand Prix circuit as recently as 1997. Those meets offered special prizes for world record performances, including a new car.

Swimming World has put in a request to USA Swimming for information regarding the full lineup for the 2013 Grand Prix Series.
