USA Swimming today announced the four-member roster set to represent the United States at the 2023 Pan American Games 10k open water competition on October 29 in Laguna Los Morros, Chile.

These open water athletes were selected based on finishes in the men’s and women’s 10k races at the 2023 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships held on April 21, 2023, in Sarasota, Florida. The selection procedures for the Pan American Games open water team can be found here.

All four of the athletes on this year’s open water team will make their Pan American Games debuts in Chile. The Pan American Games are the world’s third-largest international multi-sport Games; they are only surpassed in size and scope by the Olympic Summer Games and the Asian Games. The first Pan American Games were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951 and the inaugural Parapan American Games were held in Mexico City in 1999. Both the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games are held every four years for the athletes of the 41 PASO member nations, in the year preceding the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.

At the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, Taylor Abbott earned the silver medal in the men’s 10k event. The U.S. team left the 2019 Pan American Games with a total of 44 medals.

All Pan American Games roster nominations are pending approval of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
