It was another great night of exposure for swimming last night in Los Angeles. The sport took the spotlight at the annual ESPY awards…with Michael Phelps and company winning a good number of the major awards. Phelps won for best male athlete, record-breaking performance, championship performance and male Olympian. His fifth award was the best moment award…and that was for the epic 400 free relay that won gold in Beijing.

Cullen Jones and Garrett Weber-Gale joined Phelps on stage to accept for that honor. Jason Lezak appeared via satellite from Israel, where he's set to compete in the Maccabiah Games starting on Sunday.

Dara Torres won the comeback award. All of the awards won by swimmers, except the comeback award, were decided by a public vote so it's good to see all sports fan recognizing their accomplishments. You can watch the ESPY's Sunday on ESPN. And tonight, Phelps will be featured on ESPN's "homecoming" that's a new show where top athletes go back to their home towns and reconnect with the people who were in their lives before they made it big. So you can watch for that tonight at 7pm eastern.

The world championships start tomorrow in Rome with the men's 1-meter diving finals. Team captain Chris Colwill and Terry Horner will compete in that event for the USA. You can watch the action live on universalsports.com starting at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time and you'll also find a complete schedule of all the events there.

Three USA sectional meets began today in Houston, Knoxville, Tennessee and Gainseville, Florida. Be sure to check swimmingworld.com for the results. And also be sure to visit our high school channel for three new college recruit profiles, one of whom is world championship team member Kasey Carlson.
