US Open Day 2 Prelims: Katie Ledecky, Leah Smith, Mallory Comerford, Trey Freeman Lead Top Seeds

The first prelims session of the 2021 US Open kicked off from the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Thursday morning.

One day after winning the 800 freestyle, Katie Ledecky swam to the top seed in the 400 free.

Ledecky swarm the prelims of the 400 free in 4:01.64, ahead of the field by 12 seconds. Sierra Schmidt took the second seed in 4:13.97. Erin Gemmell (4:14.06) took the third seed, while Olympian Paige Madden is sixth (4:16.16) heading into finals.

Ledecky had splits in the 30s, with two 31-second split, then finished the final 50 on a 29.08 split to easily outpace the rest of the field. It was five seconds off of her world-record time of 3:5646 in the event. Her US Open record is 3:57.94.

Instead of swimming the 400 free at the US Open, Leah Smith opted for the 200 IM and took the top seed in 2:12.92. Summer Smith was second in 2:15.11.

Cardinal Swim Club’s Mallory Comerford took the top seed in the 50 freestyle (25.37) ahead of Camille Spink (25.57), Arina Openysheva (25.71) and Madison Kennedy (25.73).

In the men’s 400 free, Trey Freeman took the top seed in 3:50.53, ahead of Hoe Year Khiew (3:54.60) and Florida teammate Bobby Finke (3:56.27), who won the men’s 800 free on Wednesday.

Swim-MAC’s Baylor Nelson took the top seed in the men’s 200 IM (2:01.35), ahead of South Florida’s Collyn Gagne (2:02.44).

The top seed in the men’s 50 freestyle went to Andrej Barna (22.31), who was ahead of Florida’s Adam Chaney (22.54) and pros Gus Borges (22.56) and Bruno Fratus (22.58).
