US Dominates First Day of Masters World Championships

By Peter Andersen

RICCIONE, Italy, June 5. AMERICANS won the 800 meter freestyle in at least seven age groups to dominate the first day of competition on Thursday, June 3, at the FINA Masters World Championships in Riccione, Italy.

The reason I write “at least,” is because the World Championships Organizing Committee has posted the results in 10 women’ss and eight men’s age groups. Missing are women 25-29, 30-34 and 40-44, and men 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44 and 45-49 – a total of eight additional age groups.

No world records fell in the 800 meters, at least not in the 18 age groups reported.

Men’s 800m freestyle
In the men’s event, Tod Spieker, The Olympic Club, took the 55-59 race in 9:47.12, missing his own world record of 9:40.68. Bill Lauer was another winner for the USA, taking the 70-74 race in 12:20.49.

Italy’s Fabrizio Momoni came the closest to setting a world mark, as he won the 65-69 contest in 10:34.37, missing Graham Johnston’s global standard by five seconds. In the 60-64 division, Britain’s Sandy Galletly, who often represents SCAQ in Southern California, took gold in 10:22.46, some 16 seconds off his own world mark.

Women’s 800m freestyle
American women took gold in five of the 10 age groups for which results are posted.

San Diego’s Jackie Marr won the 60-64 race in 11:41.68, some eight seconds slower than the world record set last year by Australia’s Jen Thomasson.

Denise Brown clocked 10:07.04 to take the 45-49 race. Meredith Moore was victorious in the 55-59 age group in 11:19.59. Janet “Bunny” Cederlund touched first in the 80-84 division in 18:33.69. And Rita Simonton was in a class of her own in the 85-89 age group, taking the event in 18:02.04.

The best race was turned in by Japan’s Yoshiko Osaki, whose winning time of 12:11.54 in the 65-69 age grou was only five seconds off her own world record.
