Urbana Wins Maryland’s First 1-3A Swimming Title
COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, March 8. URBANA High School's men's and women's teams claimed their first-ever respective 1-3A Maryland State Championship team titles.
Maryland, which is divided into two separate classifications for swimming, hosted its inaugural state meets on Feb. 24 at the University of Maryland.
Urbana's women bested the field with a total of 291 points. Middletown took second with 233 points, and North Harford placed third with 229 points.
Queen Anne's Devin Lessard claimed state titles in both the 100 butterfly (1:01.05) and the 500 freestyle (5:29.70). Lessard was the sole double-event winner on the women's side of the competition.
The Urbana men won in a similar fashion boasting a meet-high 298.5 points. Middletown placed second overall with 192 points while Frederick finished third with 163 points.
Michael Gray of Northern used his sprinting ability to capture titles in both the 200 freestyle (1:52.59) and the 50 freestyle (22.21).
Havre de Grace's Jeff Riley easily handled competition in his two individual events. Riley placed first in the 100 freestyle (50.51) as well as the 100 backstroke (55.99).
Andrew Seebode of Easton rounded out the multiple individual event winners on the men's side. Seebode swam winning times in the 200 IM (2:06.33) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.91).
