University of California vs. Hawaii

BERKELEY, California. October 9. THE Cal men's swimming and diving team opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 156-139 dual meet victory over Hawaii at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears won eight of the meet's 16 events and had seven different individual winners, including freshman Tom Shields in the 200 free (1:40.46) and freshman Andre Blyth in the 200 fly (1:48.60). Cal also captured the 200 medley relay (1:30.38, Mathias Gydesen, Damir Dugonjic, Shields, Graeme Moore).

Other individual winners for the Bears were junior Guy Barnea in the 100 back (49.63), junior Graeme Moore in the 50 free (20.34) and sophomore Martin Liivamagi in the 200 IM (1:51.53). Cal finished one-two in the 200 breast behind sophomore Nolan Koon (2:05.12) and Liivamagi (2:05.98), and swept the 100 breast with junior Damir Dugonjic (56.08), junior Nick Ferrif (57.55) and junior Martti Aljand (57.88) as well.

Dugonjic was last year's NCAA champion in the 100 breast, clocking a time of 50.86 last March in College Station, Texas.

In diving competition, the Bears' junior Tom Henninger placed second to the Rainbows' Doogie Cohen in both the one-meter (294.00-265.72) and three-meter (309.90-281.62) competition.
