University of California-Los Angeles Maintains Top Spot In Latest CWPA Polls

The No. 1 team in the country remains without dispute in the National Top 20, while changes come from top to bottom in the Division III and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Polls as the CWPA releases the 2015 Men’s Varsity Week 12/November 25 Polls.

The undisputed top team in the land, the Bruins of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Champion the University of California-Los Angeles are once again a unanimous top selection.  Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges gains company in the concluding Division III Poll of the 2015 season as CWPA Championship runner-up/Division III Champion Johns Hopkins University finishes in a tie at No. 1.

In the CWPA Top 10 league poll, Southern Division/CWPA Champion Princeton University wraps up the season at No. 1 on the East Coast as the Tigers claimed the league championship over the weekend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), MPSF, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls will be compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2015 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 12/November 25)

The 2014 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion Bruins of the University of California-Los Angeles maintain the No. 1 position in the 2015 Week 12/November 25 National Top 20 Poll after capturing the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) title over the weekend by defeating Long Beach State University (12-7 W), the University of Southern California (6-3 W) and the University of California (12-11 W OT).

Similar to the Week 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 Polls, the Bruins (100 points) are once again a consensus top pick after tallying 99 points in the Week 2 balloting.

Following the conference championship weekend around varsity men’s water polo, changes abound in the National Top 20 as only five teams retained their positions from the Week 11/November 18 balloting.

Behind the Bruins, California (94 points) rises to No. 2 from No. 3 in the wake of a runner-up finish at the MPSF Championship.  USC (91 points) improves one place to No. 3, while the University of the Pacific (85 points) falls two positions to No. 4 after falling to the Trojans by an 8-4 count at the MPSF Championship.  Stanford University (81 points) remains at No. 5, with the University of California-Irvine (74 points) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (71 points) exchanging the No. 6 and 7 spots in the wake of a 7-4 victory by the Anteaters at the MPSF Championship.

Long Beach State University (63 points) holds on at No. 8, while Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion Princeton University (60 points) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Champion the University of California-San Diego (53 points) climb into the Top 10 and No. 9 and 10, respectively, following victories over Johns Hopkins University (7-6 W) and the University of California-Davis (6-5 W) for their respective league crowns.

UC-Davis (49 points) falls out of the Top 10 and back to No. 11 with Harvard University (47 points) and Pepperdine University (32 points) staying at No. 12 and 13 for another week.  Johns Hopkins (29 points) makes history by becoming the highest ranked Division III team in the history of the polling process by climbing up to No. 14.

Brown University (28 points) drops to No. 15 with the United States Air Force Academy (24 points), California Baptist University (18 points) and St. Francis College Brooklyn (14 points) taking over at No. 16-to-18, respectively.

Santa Clara University (13 points) and Bucknell University (13 points) complete the Top 20 as the Broncos and Bison stand in a tie at No. 19.

Loyola Marymount University (14 points), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (6 points), San Jose State University (4 points) and Whittier College (1 point) also received votes.

2015 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 12/November 25/Final)

Af ter 12 weeks the top team in Division III is a tie as Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (96 points) and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Champion/CWPA Championship runner-up Johns Hopkins University (96 points) conclude the 2015 season as equals in the Week 12/November 25/Final National Division III Top 10 Poll.

CMS, which downed Whittier College by a 12-11 final score for the SCIAC title, and Johns Hopkins, which dropped a 7-6 decision to No. 9-ranked Princeton University  for the CWPA crown, met once during the season with the Stags coming out on the better end of an 11-9 game onOctober 3.

Whittier (90 points), which was tied with JHU at No. 2 last week, falls back to No. 3 in the wake of the Blue Jays rise, with the University of Redlands (85 points) moving up to No. 4. TheMassachusetts Institute of Technology (77 points) jumps up to No. 5, with Chapman University(76 points) falling to No. 6.

 

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (72 points) hangs on at No. 7, with California Lutheran University (65 points) and the University of La Verne (61 points) exchanging the No. 8 and 9 spots. Washington & Jefferson College (35 points) completes the Top 10 with Occidental College (11 points) andConnecticut College (11 points) also receiving votes.

2015 Men’s Varsity CWPA Top 10 (Week 12/November 25)

Southern Division Champion Princeton University completes the season as the East Coast’s best as the 2015 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion Tigers top the Week 12/November 25/Final CWPA Top 10 Poll.

The final order of finish reflects the results of the CWPA Championship from Novmber 20-22 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as Princeton (100 points) takes over the No. 1 spot on the strength of victories over Bucknell University (11-7 W), Harvard University (10-8 W) andJohns Hopkins University (7-6 W) in capturing the league title and a berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

Southern Division runner-up Johns Hopkins (94 points) moves up two places to finish at No. 2 after falling to Princeton in the league title game.  Harvard (91 points) and Brown University (85 points) rate at No. 3 and 4, with St. Francis College Brooklyn (78 points) and Bucknell (77 points) rating at No. 5 and 6.

MIT (70 points), the United States Naval Academy (64 points), Fordham University (61 points) and George Washington University (55 points) complete the Top 10.
