United States Men Close Short Course Worlds With New Championship, American Record in 4×100 Medley Relay

The U.S. team of Ryan Murphy (49.63), Andrew Wilson (56.84), Caeleb Dressel (48.28), and Ryan Held (45.23) closed the meet with another championship record in the 4×100 medley relay, touching in 3:19.98 for the win. Dressel and Held had to fight back for the U.S. over the final two legs, with Dressel digging the United States out from fourth place to the top of the podium with the fastest butterfly split in the field. Their time also established a new American record in the event.

Dressel (on winning gold in the 400 after taking silver in the 200): “It’s a good night. It’s always nice to come out on top. More importantly in the relay, staying on top. We weren’t happy with the outcome in the 200 [medley] … We did what we could tonight with a tired backstroker and we did very well as a collective group.”

Murphy(on his double tonight): “It’s easy to get up and race for Team USA. There were a couple of backstrokers that had to do that double and it’s a brutal double. We’re all very patriotic and love our countries and want to try to help them win gold.”

In second was the team from Russia in 3:20.61, followed by the team from Japan in third with a 3:21.07. Notably, Australia’s Mitch Larkin had the Aussies in the lead after the backstroke leg with a 49.47 opening split, although their relay would eventually fade to eighth.
