This past week, at the United Sports Aquatic Sports convention in Dallas, the late Adolph Kiefer was honored with the R. Max Ritter award. Kiefer passed away in May at the age of 98 after a legendary life in swimming.

Kiefer was the first man to ever break 1:00 in the 100-yard backstroke and won gold in the 100-meter back at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. His swimming career was interrupted by World War II, when instead of competing at two more Olympic Games, he served in the Navy and developed a program for teaching sailors how to swim.

Later in life, he developed a major equipment brand and remained an advocate for all children learning to swim.
