UNC Wilmington Picks Up In-State Verbal Pledge from Robert Tars for 2022-23

NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Robert Tars of Greensboro, N.C. has announced his verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina, Wilmington beginning in the fall of 2022.

He is the first public verbal pledge for the Seahawks’ Class of 2026.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to UNCW swimming and diving continuing my academic and athletic career. I’d like to thank all of my family, friends teammates, and coaches for getting me where I am today. It’s been a long journey but this is just the beginning!!! GO SEAHAWKS??

A talented backstroker and freestyler, Tars does his club swimming with Greensboro YMCA and most recently earned a best time in the 200 free at the Blizzard Blitz last month after posting four top-10 finishes at the Arena Capital Classic last winter.

His best times include:

  • 50 back – 23.61
  • 100 back – 50.30
  • 200 back – 1:49.62
  • 50 free – 21.25
  • 100 free – 46.04
  • 200 free – 1:41.23
  • 200 IM – 1:56.78
  • 100 fly – 53.95

Currently a junior at Ragsdale High School, Tars has competed at the North Carolina 4A State Championships the last two seasons. He finished fifth in the 100 back and ninth in the 100 free at the NCHSAA 4A Central Regional meet in 2020.

Tars is already at scoring level at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships.  Last year, he would’ve placed in the B-final of the 100/200 back and 200 free. He’ll join a team led by newly-appointed head coach Bobby Guntoro.
