UNC Sweeps ACC Awards

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, November 13. AFTER guiding their respective teams to the first conference wins of the season, North Carolina's Keith Laabs and Kristin Oxford have been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. It is the first league recognition for both student-athletes, as the Tar Heels are the second team this season to sweep both accolades.

Laabs, a junior captain on the UNC men's swimming squad, led the 22nd-ranked Tar Heels to a decisive win over arch-rival Duke by participating in three-event victories. The native from Memphis, Tenn., swam on both of North Carolina's winning relay teams, anchoring the 200-yard medley relay squad and swimming the leadoff leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay unit. In his third event, Laabs won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.23, beating his closest competitor by over two seconds in the event.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Oxford captured both distance freestyle events in leading the No. 22 North Carolina women's swimming team to a 145-89 victory over Duke. Oxford won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:09.62, the fourth fastest time in the event in the ACC this season. She also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.48, which now ranks as the second fastest time recorded in the ACC during the 2006-07 season.
