UMBC Gets Pair of Verbals from Marlins of Raleigh Teammates JJ Chapman, Tull Perkins
NEW COMMIT: The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has received two verbal commitments for the fall of 2021 from current club teammates JJ Chapman of Cary, N.C. and Tull Perkins of Raleigh, N.C.
Both talented swimmers, who train with Marlins of Raleigh, will suit up for the Retrievers as members of the Class of 2025.

Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I’m excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and swim career at UMBC! I would like to thank my family, friends, and coaches for everything they’ve done for me! Most importantly I’d like to thank God for all the opportunists he’s given me! Go dawgs!”
Chapman earned a total of seven best times at two intrasquad meets during this summer after placing 13th in the 200m back at Cary Sectionals in March. He raced six events at North Carolina Seniors in December and placed 21st in the 200m back at Greensboro Futures in Summer 2019.
His best times include:
- 50 back – 25.15
- 100 back – 52.27
- 200 back – 1:49.50
- 200 IM – 1:51.70
- 400 IM – 3:58.18
Also competing for Apex High School, Chapman is a four-time individual North Carolina State Championship finalist. He placed seventh in the 200 IM and 13th in the 100 back as a junior at the 4A meet while earning bronze in the 100 breast and 200 IM as a freshman at the 1A/2A meet.
TULL PERKINS

He told Swimming World:
“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at UMBC. Thank you to my family, coaches and teammates who helped me along the way. GO DAWGS!”
Perkins recorded six best times throughout intrasquad meets over the summer after finaling in eight events at Cary Sectionals. He placed 12th in the 200m breast at North Carolina LCM Seniors in 2019 before going on to finish 23rd in the 400m IM at Greensboro Futures.
His best times include:
- 500 free – 4:39.48
- 1000 free – 9:33.79
- 1650 free – 16:16.43
- 100 breast – 58.12
- 200 breast – 2:05.12
- 200 IM – 1:56.31
- 400 IM – 4:02.56
Currently a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School, Perkins raced to 14th place in the 500 free at the North Carolina 4A State Championships during his junior campaign. He earned bronze in that event at the 4A Eastern Regional meet the week prior where he also took fourth in the 200 IM.
