UCLA SPIEKER AQUATICS CENTER INSTALLS THE BEST

By Brittany Westerberg

Coaches, student-athletes and a capacity crowd of fans were in attendance Sept. 26 for the first official athletic event at the new Spieker Aquatics Center at the University of California–Los Angeles. They were treated to not only a victory for the men's water polo team in the new home for their aquatics sports, but also a completely integrated scoring, timing and video system designed, manufactured and installed by Daktronics for swimming, diving and water polo.

"We are extremely excited about the opportunities the new integrated system Daktronics will provide for our new aquatics center," Kevin Borg, Director of Facilities, said. "Over the years, we've said, ‘Let's give our athletes something they can call their home.' With the Daktronics video and timing equipment, we will have the best state-of-the-art system as they come." The new 23 mm video display sits on the east side of the venue, next to the "Champions Wall" showcasing the accomplishments of UCLA's past and present aquatics teams. The display measures almost nine feet high by nearly 16 feet wide. UCLA did not have a video board before this installation, and will use it for a mixture of scoring and results as well as live video, instant replays, custom animations to keep the crowd involved and sponsor recognition.

"They wanted a brand new, integrated system that included video, timing and scoring," Robin Hall, Daktronics Regional Sales, said. "At Daktronics, we work hard to provide state-of the-art integrated equipment and excellent service to our customers."

Student athletes competing at the new aquatics center can look forward to accurate timing, as the system will ensure precise and consistent timing of events with the combination of Relay Take Off Platforms (RTOPs), Daktronics patented touchpads and OmniSport® 2000 consoles. Daktronics also installed pace clocks and horn start systems to supplement the timing system.

"UCLA has built a beautiful facility," Hall said. "We appreciate the opportunity to work with them again to give their fans, athletes and coaches an excellent experience." "Daktronics has been committed to the aquatics market," Cyndi Gallagher, UCLA's head swimming coach, said. "Now Daktronics has provided us with touchpads and timing equipment that are some of the best in the NCAA marketplace."

Daktronics aquatics displays and timing equipment were used at five major NCAA championship swimming and diving meets this past spring: the Big East Championships at the IUPUI Indianapolis campus, the Big Ten Championships at Purdue, the SEC Men's Championships at
Auburn University, the Division I Championships at Texas A&M College Station and the Division II Championships at the University of Houston. UCLA's versatile and completely integrated video display.
