U.S. Open Water World Championships Trials: Micha Burden, Kirsten Groome Finish 1-2 in Women’s 10K; Complete Results Included

FORT MYERS, Florida, October 20. MISSION Viejo's Micha Burden (2:00:47.48) and First Colony's Kirsten Groome (2:01:05.43) will represent the United States women at the 2008 FINA Open Water World Championships in Seville, Spain next April after finishing 1-2 in the women's 10K at the U.S. Open Water World Championships Trials.

Incredibly, the two favorites to make it through to Seville just missed out as Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton (2:01:09.02) and Club Wolverine's Kalyn Keller placed third and fourth.

This group of four swimmers led from the start and remained a pack throughout the duration of the event. At the last turn at the 8.75K mark, Burden picked up the pace to open a lead, as she had been sitting third throughout the event. She wound up winning with clear water.

Meanwhile, Groome and Sutton battled through the finish, but Groome was in a better position to make her final move down the stretch. Meanwhile, Keller wound up drifting back a bit to finish fourth.

According to USA Swimming reports, Sutton, who had led the entire race, collided with Burden in the final turn allowing Burden to make up some ground.

"You run into each other a lot in open water," Burden told USA Swimming. "You have to be prepared to get a little physical if need be. This has been my dream since I was a little girl. I am kind of in shock. This is what I have been working for my whole life."

Sutton and Keller will compete in the 5K at Worlds, while both will serve as alternates in the 10K for the U.S.
